Welcome, my friends. You've found the site of Mark S. King, award-winning columnist, author and video blogger. I'm an absurdist, a lover of human frailty, and a gay man in recovery living with HIV. Still with me?
You may have viewed my video blog at TheBody.com (the best HIV resource on the internet), where my life is well documented, to say the least ("My Fabulous Disease"). This site is meant to provide some background as well as links to my writings and videos.
Most of my creative passion these days is focused on the video blog. I write, videotape and edit the blogs myself and I'm having a blast. The blog has become a popular feature of TheBody and consistently ranks as the most viewed page. You'll find an updated listing of my video blog on the widget screen to your right.
My book, A Place Like This, is available through all online book sellers such as Amazon.com and BarnesandNoble.com. It is a poignant, funny memoir of Los Angeles in the 1980’s, and follows my transformation from a young, wholesome actor in television commercials to a drug addict and owner of a phone sex company. When AIDS began it’s tragic march through the gay community, life took another turn as I cared for friends and became involved in the earliest community response to the epidemic. For anyone who lived through those turbulent times, or those interested in what it was truly like, the book is a definitive account of that time and place. For reviews, or to read the prologue (and watch me win a car on The Price is Right!), just click here.
My writing has been printed in publications as varied as The Advocate, Newsweek, Arts & Understanding, and many others. The essays explore themes ranging from growing up gay, AIDS, family, recovery, and a host of other issues. Browse the articles section to read more.
Maintaining a clean and sober life is Job One today (my Newsweek piece outlines my self destructive path from a community AIDS leader to an I.V. drug user). Part of that ongoing job is to be of service to other people. I hope my work might speak to your own experiences, or help you understand the journey of someone unlike yourself. Whatever the case, thanks for visiting my site, and please be well.
